Healthcare

Healthcare setup is easiest when you match your insurance network to nearby primary care, urgent care, hospitals, specialists, pharmacies, and emergency options.

Major systems and local care

North Carolina has large systems including UNC Health, Duke Health, Atrium Health, Novant Health, WakeMed, Cone Health, and regional hospitals. UNC Health has a statewide network, Duke Health is especially prominent in the Triangle, and Atrium Health is a major provider in the Charlotte region.

For routine care, establish a primary care provider soon after moving. New-patient appointments can take weeks, especially for pediatrics, mental health, dermatology, and specialty care.

Insurance and coverage

Check whether your doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, labs, and urgent care centers are in network before using them. If you need coverage, review employer benefits, HealthCare.gov marketplace plans, Medicaid eligibility, and local community clinics.

Keep copies of prescriptions, vaccine records, diagnosis history, medical devices, and specialist referrals during the move.

Urgent care vs emergency care

Urgent care is useful for non-life-threatening issues such as minor injuries, infections, fever, and basic testing. Emergency departments are for serious or life-threatening symptoms, severe pain, stroke signs, major injuries, breathing trouble, or chest pain.

Save nearby urgent care, hospital, pharmacy, poison control, and pediatric after-hours numbers in your phone.

Tip: save screenshots or PDFs of confirmations, appointments, applications, receipts, and policy details while you settle in. They are often useful for school enrollment, housing, insurance, DMV visits, and account setup.
