The Triangle usually means Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, and nearby communities. The Triad usually means Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, and surrounding areas. CLT often means Charlotte or Charlotte Douglas International Airport, while RDU means Raleigh-Durham International Airport and is also used casually for the Triangle.
OBX means the Outer Banks. Down east usually points toward eastern North Carolina and coastal plain communities. The mountains usually means western North Carolina around Asheville, Boone, Hendersonville, and the Blue Ridge area.
Culture and identity
A Tar Heel is a North Carolinian and also the nickname for UNC-Chapel Hill teams. Tobacco Road often refers to the historic basketball rivalry corridor involving UNC, Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest.
Barbecue can mean different things by region: eastern-style whole-hog barbecue with vinegar sauce, or Lexington-style pork shoulder with a vinegar-and-tomato dip.
